BOTANICAL STUDY TOURS IN LYCIA TURKEY

The Spring Flowers of Lycia in South West Turkey

Walking with Flowers in Turkey 2015 - With Dr Patrick Harding

April 14th – 21st - £770 per person NOW OPEN FOR BOOKINGS

The ancient region of Lycia is a special area for spring flowers. There are over 9,000 species of wild flower in Turkey – about six times the number in many more northern European countries. Turkey is a very large country with a great diversity of climate, edaphic (soil) and other conditions so many species are limited to certain regions; even so there are a lot of species to be found in the Lycian region especially as this includes Mediterranean coastal areas and mountain ranges with summits reaching heights in excess of 3,000 m.

Some 30% of Turkish plant species are endemic (restricted) to Turkey and the nearby Aegean Islands. The number of endemics is especially high in the Anatolian mountain ranges where different peaks represent isolated populations; analogous to the individual Galapagos Islands. Unlike more northern countries there was only limited ice cover in the last Ice Age – a feature that has left many European countries with less than 3% endemic species.

Our programme comprises a week of wild flowers and other wildlife, walks and ancient sites based at our small, friendly hotel (Trip Advisor’s number one) in the pretty seaside village of Adrasan near Olympos on Turkey’s beautiful Turquoise Coast. Spring here is typically warm and sunny. Daily walks (from 2 to 5 miles) in the undulating verdant foothills of Mount Olympos will be at a gentle pace allowing time to photograph and enjoy the wonderful scenery, and identify the stunning wild flowers, beautiful butterflies, birds such as hoopoe and eagles and animals including tortoises, terrapins and land crabs. During our first trip in April 2011 we found over 200 separate species of plants. Over subsequent years that list has been extended to include nearly 400 species, with over 30 new entries found in 2014.

The dramatic landscape comprises natural and protected forest, national parkland and is dotted with the remains of the ancient civilisation of Lycia. The walks will traverse a range of habitats thus providing varied scenery and new flowers on each day. The walks include sections of the famous Lycian Way. Habitats include coastal, wooded, hill pasture, ancient terraces and farmland. Among the nearly 400 blooming wild flower species are orchids, hollyhocks, catch flies and gladioli. The extensive history of Lycia means that we will also find species steeped in medical history as well as religious and legendary anecdotes.

This will be the fifth year that the holiday will be led by Dr Patrick Harding, a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and humorous teacher who has also led groups in Slovenia, Finland, La Palma and the Isles of Scilly. Patrick teaches for many organisations including Oxford and Cambridge Universities, has written 8 books (on flowers, trees and fungi) and has appeared many times on television. The course is aimed and those who enjoy both walking and flowers – we will not identify everything and both scientific and common names will be used.

Our hotel, the Ottoman Palace is a small, purpose built hotel where we provide full board (with plenty of fresh fruit and local produce) including packed lunches and a minibus service which will take us to and from our daily walks. The pace will allow us to find, identify, photograph and enjoy the flowers. Each evening there will be a pre-prandial session going over the finds of the day.

The nearest airport is at Antalya and the cost of the holiday includes transfer from and to Antalya airport. Direct flights to Antalya are available from a range of regional airports in Britain.
