Boutique Holidays In Turkey Years of Local Experience for your Holiday

FLORAL STUDY TOUR

The

ancient

region

of

Lycia

is

a

special

area

for

spring

flowers.

There

are

over

9,000

species

of

wild

flower

in

Turkey

about

six

times

the

number

in

many

more

northern

European

countries.

Turkey

is

a

very

large

country

with

a

great

diversity

of

climate,

edaphic

(soil)

and

other

conditions

so

many

species

are

limited

to

certain

regions;

even

so

there

are

a

lot

of

species

to

be

found

in

the

Lycian

region

especially

as

this

includes

Mediterranean

coastal

areas

and

mountain

ranges with summits reaching heights in excess of 3,000 m.

The

dramatic

landscape

comprises

natural

and

protected

forest,

national

parkland

and

is

dotted

with

the

remains

of

the

ancient

civilisation

of

Lycia.

The

walks

will

traverse

a

range

of

habitats

thus

providing

varied

scenery

and

new

flowers

on

each

day.

The

walks

include

sections

of

the

famous

Lycian

Way.

Habitats

include

coastal,

wooded,

hill

pasture,

ancient

terraces

and

farmland.

Among

the

nearly

400

blooming

wild

flower

species

are

orchids,

hollyhocks,

catch

flies

and

gladioli.

The

extensive

history

of

Lycia

means

that

we will also find species steeped in medical history as well as religious and legendary anecdotes.

For

the

last

six

years

Dr

Patrick

Harding,

a

knowledgeable,

enthusiastic

and

humorous

teacher

has

led

our

floral

groups.

His

enthusiasm

has

however

gradually

succumbed

to

the

rigors

of

the

passing

years

and

he

no

longer

feels

he

can

no

longer

commit

the

time

and

effort

to

run

the

groups

for

us.

However

in

those

six

years

he

has

left

us

with

a

wonderful

legacy

of

knowledge

of

the

wild

flowers

of

Lycia.

We

have

spent

a

great

deal

of

time

learning

and

documenting

as

much

information

as

we

can

on

this

fascinating

and

beautiful

subject.

perhaps

his

most

important

legacy

he

has

left

us

is

our

enthusiasm

for

exploring

and

learning about these stunning flowers.

Our

tour

is

not

a

“dry

and

dusty”

lecture

tour.

We

have

a

good

basic

knowledge

of

the

flowers,

we

know

the

main

families

of

flowers

we

are

likely

to

encounter.

We

know

where

the

best

places

are

to

find

a

wide

range

of

habitats

and

hence

a

variety

of

flower

species.

We

will

work

with

a

list

of

over

400

species

that

we

have

encountered

before

and

some

notes

that

are

specific

to

identifying

the

most

common

families.

These

together with our collection of reference books should enable us to identify the majority of flowers.

This   tour   aims   primarily   on   the   enjoyment   of   the   environment   and   the   splendid   displays   of   spring   flowers. We   have   the   knowledge   and   reference   material   to   identify   the   majority   of   finds.   During   the   walks   we   will focus   on   identification   of   species’   family   group.   This   reduces   the   number   of   species   to   a   manageable number   so   that   an   individual   specimen   can   often   be   found   in   our   flower   list.   There   are   however   so   many species   and   many   are   endemic   not   only   to   Turkey   but   even   to   the   local   area.   For   some   of   these   we   can expect to need to refer to reference materials.

You will be provided with the following reference materials:-

List   of   400+   flower   species   grouped   into   families.   Each   item   has   both   Latin   and   English   names, description   and   location   details.   Also   reference   details   for   it   entry   in   our   main   reference   book   (our botanical bible) Flowers of Turkey by Gerhard Pils. A   cross   reference   of   the   main   features   of   the   12   most   commonly   found   family   groups.   This   is   the “field manual” to get your search for a specific identification down to manageable numbers. Wild   Flowers   of   the   Mediterranean   by   Christopher   Grey-Wilson,   Illustrated   by   Marjorie   Blamie.   This is a good handbook with excellent illustrations. Wild   Flowers   of   Turkey   by   Nazem   Öztürk   a   photographic   record   of   many   species   grouped   by   colour. Each item is indexed by height, elevation, habitat, where found, flourescence, family etc. Field   Guide   to   Wild   Flowers   of   Turkey   -   Bulbous   Plants   by   Yasemin   Konuralp.   A   photo   guide   to bulbous plants with other detailed information. Flowers   of   Turkey   by   Gerhard   Pils   We   have   one   rather   delicate   and   much   loved   copy   of   this   is   the generally   accepted   total   reference   book.   It   is   photographic   grouped   by   family   with   index   information on height, elevation, habitat, season etc. We also have a few reference books on wildlife and birds. If   you   want   to   buy   your   own   reference   book   in   advance   then   probaby   the   Marjorie   Blamey   -   Wild   Flowers   of the   Mediterranean   is   possibly   the   best   value.   ISBN   978-0-7136-7015-8   Priced   at   £15.90   (New   paperback) or from £5.53 (Used) from Amazon as at time of writing. You will receive the flower list before departure which works well with this book.
